An employee alleging discrimination by the City of Boston’s Treasury Division was awarded nearly $3 million in punitive, emotional distress, and compensatory damages after the court upheld a judgement against the city. The employee, who is of Haitian descent, was found to have received poor performance reviews, was passed over for promotion, and was prevented from doing her job. The court also found that the employee was “diminished and demeaned” after filing a complaint with the MCAD in 2011.
This case should serve as a reminder to employees that they may not be discriminated against based on their race or national origin, or for filing a complaint at the MCAD.
